We Will have Be Young
We Will have Be Young
In summer of 2016 and 2017 twelve young photographers from eight South-East Asian countries met for the 5 day Southeast Asian Photography Masterclass by Jörg Brüggemann and Tobias Kruse (Ostkreuz Photographers’ Agency) during the Obscura Festival of Photography in Georgetown, Malaysia.
After the initial workshop the photographers returned home to develop their own project whilst continuing to communicate with each other: Ideas and images were reviewed repeatedly, across different time zones and cultural boundaries. The series of images have a common topic – ‘Youth’. The resulting book ‘ We Will Have Been Young’ addresses time honoured themes contextualised in the rapid emergence of South East Asia.
The book features the work of:
Dennese Victoria ( Singapore)
Alvin Lau (Malaysia)
Lee Chang Ming ( Singapore)
Amrita Chandradas ( Singapore)
Asrul Dwi ( Indonesia)
Yu Yu Myint Than ( Mayanmar)
Elliott Koon (Malaysia)
Linh Pham ( Vietnam)
Muhammad Fadli (Indonesia)
Kanel Khiev ( Cambodia)
Geric Cruz ( Phillipines)
Watsamon Tri-yasakda (Thailand)
‘We Will have Be Young’ is an important intorduction to the variety of photographic practice emerging from South East Asia, shot without constraints of established photographic structures, this glimpse into South East Asia shows us the breath and diversity of what is Youth in a complex yet seemingly accessible region.
